Three shippers complained to FMC: MSC, the world’s largest liner company, charged unreasonably

Three shippers have filed complaints with the U.S. Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) against MSC, the world’s largest liner company, citing unfair charges and insufficient container transit time, among others.

MVM Logistics was the first shipper to file three complaints dating from August 2020 to February 2022, when the company has now declared insolvency and bankruptcy. MVM claims that Switzerland-based MSC not only caused the delay and charged for it, but also incurs the LGC “gate delay fee”, which is 200 per container levied on truck drivers who fail to pick up boxes within a given period of operation. USD fee.

“Every week we are forced to apply for a late gate confirmation fee – it’s not always available, and when it is, it’s only for one voyage and most of the time, the terminal closes before the end of a given voyage.” MVM said in its complaint to the FMC.

According to MVM, thousands of operators tried to deliver containers within a short time frame, but “only a small number” made it through the gates on time, and the rest were charged $200. “MSC has once again found an easy way to gain a quick and unfair fortune at the expense of its own customers,” the freight forwarding company claimed.

In addition, the daily charge for MVM is unfair because the carrier did not provide the equipment, or changed the delivery and pick-up time of the container, making it difficult for the forwarder to avoid paying the fee.

In response, MSC said MVM’s complaints were either “too vague to respond to”, or it simply denied the allegations.
