Ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach may implement long-delayed container detention fees, which would affect the shipping companies

Maersk said this week that it expects the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to implement container detention charges soon. The measure, announced in October last year, has been delayed week after week as the ports continue to deal with congestion. In a rate announcement, the company said the likelihood of the fee being implemented “has risen substantially”

Los Angeles-Long Beach Container Detention Charges Bill Passed, Container Detention Time Calculations Begin Monday

According to this policy, if the empty container of the shipping company stays at the terminal for 9 days, it will be levied USD 100, and it will increase day by day, and each container will accumulate USD 100 per day. For containers shipped by rail, the carrier will charge demurrage charges from the 6th day. The fee is $100 per container, increasing by $100 per container per day.

According to Maersk, “the relevant port authority will collect the fee and submit the bill to the ocean carrier, acting as a collection agent, charging and invoicing those who have an interest in the cargo in the fully loaded import container.” The company noted that it “Any payment due will be collected from the owner (or his nominated demurrage payer) prior to the release of the goods.

To help customers mitigate their expense risk, if implemented, Maersk has developed an off-dock hauling program for long-stay containers in Los Angeles and Newark, and is considering implementing a similar program elsewhere. It’s also promoting “Saturday Gate Rewards” in Los Angeles and Long Beach, offering a $100-per-container credit for import pickups through June 18.
