In a significant development for Sino-Brazilian trade relations, the Chinese Embassy in Brazil announced that 183 Brazilian coffee companies have been officially approved to export their products to the Chinese market. The measure, which took effect on July 30, 2025, will remain valid for a period of five years.

This move represents a major opportunity for Brazilian exporters, particularly in light of recent trade tensions with the United States. The U.S. government has confirmed that, effective August 6, it will impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian coffee and other selected goods. The new Chinese market access could help Brazilian exporters offset the impact of this tariff by providing an alternative destination for their products.

Brazil currently exports approximately 8 million bags of coffee beans annually to the United States. According to trade data from the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Council, Brazil shipped 440,034 bags (60kg each) of coffee to the U.S. in June alone—almost eight times more than the 56,000 bags exported to China during the same period.

China’s approval of Brazilian products extends beyond coffee. The same announcement confirmed the authorization of 30 Brazilian sesame exporters and 46 animal protein meal companies to export to China. Like the coffee approval, these certifications are valid for five years.

This expanded access marks a strategic enhancement of the agricultural trade corridor between China and Brazil, reinforcing China’s position as Brazil’s largest trading partner. Meanwhile, the U.S. continues to serve as a key market for Brazilian beef, orange juice, and other commodities.

These developments signal growing diversification in Brazil’s export strategy and highlight China’s increasing role in the global agricultural supply chain.
