Can CIIE Exhibits Be Retained in China After the Exhibition?

The answer is yes—under certain conditions.

Exhibits imported into China under an ATA Carnet are generally required to be re-exported after the exhibition. However, if the exhibits were declared on an itemized basis upon entry, exhibitors may apply to the competent Customs authority to retain (purchase) the exhibits in China.

For exhibits subject to import licensing or other regulatory requirements, the importer must first obtain the necessary permits before completing the customs declaration and import duty payment procedures for permanent importation.

As the retention process involves customs regulations, licensing requirements, and tax compliance, it is advisable to consult an experienced customs brokerage before submitting an application.

If you are planning to exhibit at the China International Import Expo (CIIE) and have questions about ATA Carnets, customs clearance, exhibit retention, or import compliance, feel free to contact me. I’m happy to discuss how we can support your business in entering the Chinese market.
