According to local media outlet Colombo Gazette, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has reported that the Sri Lankan government has outlined a preliminary roadmap to fully lift its vehicle import ban by 2025. Under this plan, Sri Lanka will begin allowing the import of public transportation and special purpose vehicles in the third quarter of 2024, followed by the import of freight vehicles in the fourth quarter of the same year. By 2025, Sri Lanka aims to completely remove all import restrictions on motor vehicles.

It is noted that the Sri Lankan government imposed the vehicle import ban from 2021 to 2022 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and continued the ban due to the ongoing economic crisis. In August 2022, the Sri Lankan government imposed import bans on 1,465 items due to the economic crisis, but has since lifted most of these restrictions.
